My 180 Gallon Cycled!!! YESSSS!

Postby talandonna » Wed Aug 10, 2016 5:00 pm

Tried the fishless cycling on my 180 Gallon Tank that I decided to set up again after 10 years. Had some heart trouble and let it go after surgery 9 years ago and I am just now getting it set back up.
Have a Rena XP4 and a Flugal FX5 loaded with Biohome Ultimate media (got 14 lbs of the stuff in the filters) with texas holey rock and a Tahitian moon sand substrate.
The fishless cycle took 20 days. The initial ammonia dose read 0 ppm on day 5. I added 3 tsp of 10% ammonia solution each day after to raise the ammonia level to 5 ppm. Nitrites spiked and went off the scale on the API test kit on day 9. Kept adding ammonia every day and on day 19 I finally noticed the nitrite test didn't turn purple instantly before I shook the tube, so I knew they were coming down. On day 20, tested for nitrites and it was 0 ppm. Then I did a little Jig!!!!!!! What a great feeling!!

First time I have tried the fishless cycle and thoroughly enjoyed the process!!!

Can't wait to get some fish now. Need to keep adding ammonia to feed the cycle until I can go get some Tanganyikan Cichlids for the tank!!!!

I HIGHLY recommend using fishless cycling. Pretty cool process. I am an old Biology teacher so the whole deal fascinated me from the start!

My water parameters held steady through the whole process

KH- 14

GH- 42 (I live in the country and well water is really hard) Out of the tap the GH is 63 so I had to add rain water to get it down to 42

pH - 8.7

Temp - 80

After day 5 the bacteria ate up all of the 5 ppm of ammonia I added each day

Got frustrated after about day 15 with no change in nitrites but only had to wait 5 more days and it disappeared.

Setting up a Tanganyikan community tank with it. Any suggestions on Fish I should buy?????

Welcome to Cichlid-forum and congrats on the cycle!

What are the dimensions of your tank? What fish made you choose Tanganyikans?

Tank is 72x24x24
Tanganyikans have always fascinated me. Had a tank of them years ago and just love the array of fish you can aquire. Got hooked on Frontosa about 12 years ago and expanded from there. Haven't had this tank set up for about 9 years. Had heart trouble back then and let it go. Finally getting it set back up.

My favorite mix in a 72" tank was:
20 cyps (Kerenge)
2 calvus (now I would try for a colony)
4 caudopunctatus
6 Synodontis
2 Julidochromis

do you think an Eretmodus cyanostictus pair would fit in there too or would the calvus be too aggressive for them?
