Africa themed tank stocking help

Postby Andrew20 » Tue Jan 12, 2016 3:44 am

So I was thinking of making a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium with 1 leopard ctenopoma with 5 Congo tetras and 2 gold killifish. I'm pretty new to this so I don't know if I'm overstocking or the fish aren't compatible. The 55 gallon is a regular 48" tank. Any ideas and thoughts are welcomed.

Seems ok as long as the other won't fit in the leaf fish's mouth. Maybe add a few more Congo's and something smaller syno cats. My African river tank has a pair off buffalo head cichlids 10 Congo tetra and 4 syno nigerventer.

What species are you talking about when you say "Gold Killifish"? Because the Golden Wonder Killies are Asian in origin, not African. So it depends on how tightly you want to stick to the African theme. I have never kept any Ctenopoma, but my understanding is that they are primarily ambush predators, like real leaf fish. So anything that will fit in their mouth will be eaten eventually. Long skinny fish are not a good choice.

Thank you for the feedback, I thought the killifish was african lol. I also know the ctenopoma are ambush predators so I'll look more into it.

Are there any more african fish that would be compatible with the ctenopoma.

An African butterfly fish may work, since they hang out at the surface.
