is it true that salt shouldnt be used as a tonic? is it necessary to use after every water change?

I only use salt in situations where my cichlids need some extra help if injured or sick. I do not keep africans any longer, but when I did I never used salt or did anything "special" to the water but do my weekly 1/3 change of water.
