New to the world of cichlids? For discussion on how to set up new tanks, including placement, filtration, substrates, water, etc. No stocking discussions here.

I am part way through cycling a tank and have found out that I will be away for three weeks next month. Is there any way that I can keep the bacteria in my canister alive for that period?
If I dump in a bunch of flakes how long will it take for them to break down and start feeding the bacteria?

How are you currently cycling your tank?
Honestly, I wouldn't do or add anything to help the cycle along while you are gone as it could do more harm than good. Your tank will continue to cycle just a bit more slowly and you may be surprised when you get back from your trip that it may be almost done cycling. If it is not, just continue to cycle as you are currently doing.
You do want to leave the filter(s) running but don't need to keep the lights on and you want to be sure to top the tank up with water and keep the lids tight fitting to limit evaporation.
Will anyone be there to make sure nothing goes wrong or to add water to top off?

I am cycling with liquid ammonia.
Currently the bacteria is clearing 2 ppm in just over 48 hrs.
Yes, someone will be in the house whilst I am away but I did not want to burden them with measuring out and adding ammonia etc.

I would just wait until you get back from the trip and not have anyone dose ammonia. As I said, you should just be able to pick back up where you left off after you do your water testing.

You are confidant that the bacteria will survive without any "food"?

They will survive though they may go dormant which is not an issue unless you are in a great big hurry to get the tank finished cycling.
Have you tested for nitrite yet? Just curious if you are seeing any increase yet.

Nitrite is still at zero.

I agree with Deeda.

Thanks Guys, I think I will just leave things circulating and see what I have when I return.
