Water flow for taller tanks

Postby spn1025 » Sat Nov 30, 2019 8:42 pm

What’s the trick for properly setting up the water flow for taller (24”) tanks?

I have a 65 gallon with a Cobalt EXT canister (210gph) and a Top Fin Silentstream 75 (400gph) HOB filter.

Naturally the HOB only reaches to about half depth.
The canister input is at the bottom back-right corner and the output is at the top back-left corner.

Was thinking of adding a length of hose to the output of the canister so it’s at the bottom rather than top.

Not sure what other options I have.

Do I need a water jet/pump in this tank?

Are you getting waste settling in a particular spot? You seem to have almost 10x turnover which is pretty good.

Thanks. I was just thinking all of the water movement is on the top and not enough movement on the bottom.

What type of outlet do you have on your canister filter, nozzle or spraybar?

You can add two wavemakers and triangulate water movement. That should help you to cover the whole tank.

Nozzle outlet for the canister. It didn’t come with a spray bar, but there’s enough surface movement from the HOB filter anyway.
I think I’ll just get a piece of tubing for the outlet so it reaches the bottom. If that doesn’t work, I’ll look into a wave maker.

Why not just direct the nozzle outlet more towards the bottom of the tank?

Any chance you can post a few pics or a video of how your water flow is now?

Here’s one from 2 months ago, same setup for the most part.

The HOB covers the left side and the canister covers the right.

Thanks and I do like your MS Paint explanation, very helpful.

I would play around with the canister filter nozzle positioning, maybe place the nozzle to the left of the power filter, angled downward or even toward the short end of the tank. Sometimes it just takes moving the outflow a few times to accomplish the water movement you want.
