First dwarf mbuna

I'm looking at getting a new tank 48x12x15.

It's around 38 gallons. Is this big enough for a single species only ? It's probably going to be some saulosi.

Thanks.

You could do just saulosi, 3m:12f.

Or you could do 2 species with 1m:5f of each. The 48x12 footprint gives you more options than a 36" long tank.

May I ask what species you would recommend ? I've been so focused on the saulosi that I've not really looked at any other .

Do you have a favorite African that caused you to want to do an African cichlid tank?

Another good beginner mbuna is yellow labs, but you probably don't want them with saulosi because of the yellow females.

Rusties are another good beginner mbuna. Iodotropheus sprengerae.

If i'm honest due to the tank I have no I've not really thought about any other cichlids apart from sauosli.

I love nice colours, it's the reason I'm moving to Malawi cichlids .

What would you suggest to go with yellow labs ?

Have you considered White labs with your Saulosi? I have one tank with that mix and like the color of those two together. Also have a tank with Yellow labs and Afras which looks nice as well.

I like the look of the Cynotilapia afra, how many would be suitable with yellow labs?

1m:4f of each species. Note Cynotilapia afra females are drab. Also the new name is Cynotilapia zebroides so you might find the same fish listed with that name.

What else would you suggest for that size of tank ? I do like the yellow labs but just need something else to mix in ?

I liked Ralph493's suggestion of saulosi and white labs. Or just saulosi.

Or yellow labs and Cynotilapia sp. hara.

Can you get all these things where you are?
