Identify Cichlid

Postby ace79 » Thu Jan 21, 2021 12:41 pm

Can some help me identify this Cichlid I bought them as Deep water haps. I’ve been told a few times that this isn’t a deep water hap and that it’s a azureus because when he was young he had 3 black spots and at no time a deep water hap has 3 black spots. That you in advance.

It's probably a hybrid between a deep water hap, and some three spotted Copadichromis, such as azureus. You can see the spots on the female in the picture, which Deep Waters don't have, but you can see clearly the shape and the colour is similar to a Deep water.

I have a 5" Copadichromis Chrysonotus that looks similar but with more color. It might be the photo, but he looks like he had more color when he was younger. What size is he now?

They do look like Deep Water Hap mixed with Azureus probably. Definitely not pure Deep Water Hap.

Copadichromis Chrysonotus do not really look like that either. GowanusBklyn, your fish is probably Azureus or a mix, Chrysonatus is a very old trade name.

There are far more hybrids in the hobby, using the name "chrysonotus", than pure chrysonotus. In fact, I'd go so far as to say pure chrysonotus are relatively rare.

Note the differences in the angle of the jaw, shape of the head. Proper chrysonotus is a very dark blue fish.
