Discussion regarding only Central American Cichlid species. (Guapotes, Jack Dempseys, Red Devils, Firemouths, Convicts, Texas Cichlids, etc.)

Just read the link on the home page about the U of N adoption. It said at the end of the article 10 gallon required for smaller fish and 20 for the larger. What cichlid that preys on platys could be housed in a 20 much less a 10 gallon tank?

Good point, maybe someone in the CA section will have ideas.

Different standards. They need to get rid of these fish and the reality is there is not enough people with empty 4 foot or larger tanks to devote to aggressive cichlids. Of course there are always some people who will take free fish whether it is suitable for their tank or not. Their isn't any real consensus on minimum tank sizes, and perspectives have changed a lot over time. I find a lot of people on internet fish forums will put the minimum tank size for a fish at the size of tank they happen to keep the fish in......how convient
But even by the standards of 30-40 years ago, few would consider 20 gallons as sufficient for large CA, other then maybe very short term. Today, you would find some debate whether 20 gallons is sufficient for even the very smallest species of CA.
