lamprologus ocellatus gold questions

Hello,
I have some quick questions about lamprologus ocellatus gold I am thinking of getting. Would a 20g long be suitable for a small colony of these fish in a species only? I was thinking 6-8 but I’m here for suggestions on that as well. I was going to run a fluval 304 with the flow seriously restricted due to the smaller tank (it’s just laying around so figured I’d use it). Would you recommend adding crushed coral to the filter for a ph buff or is this not a major issue? If so is there a guideline for how much to use? Thank you for your help!

I've not kept the 'gold' variety but check out This article from the C-F Library for some basic info.

What are your current tap water parameters for pH, GH (hardness) and KH (alkalinity)? If you don't have the test kits, I suggest buying them so you will know whether you NEED to adjust your water parameters.

I have not checked my water yet but I will. I’ve also read this article which was very helpful but I was wondering if anyone has kept a colony in a 20GL.

I did not have any luck with the group that I purchased. I had six of them in a six foot 125G tank and ended up with only one after several weeks.

I have had great luck with Caudopunctatus, Brevis, Multies, and Similis. I would recommend either the Multies or Similis as they are colony fish.

I am working on breeding some Julidochromis Ornatus as well.
