So I got 10 young calvus in Dec and lost 3. While I was away for 10 days. (Sucked) since then tho got 7 growing nicely but just this evening notice one dark one hiding in the corner breathing heavy but try to eat but look scared to come out from behind the shell. Will one male take over the tank and would he leave just the females alone? Or would he go after the female aswell??
Appricate the feedback started up fish room after alway working away and finally bsck working locally.lot to learning still young at this want to learn from the experts and experience ones
Thank you

When you say young, how old/large are they? I wouldn't expect you to see any aggression for at least a year or more. Still, up in a corner is usually a telltale sign of a fish being bullied.

How large is your tank? Unless very large, you will typically end up with a single pair. I have heard of folks with stable trios, but I haven't ever seen it. Both the males and the females can be aggressive, and the dominant pair won't tolerate others. Note that they will turn aggressive long before they will actually spawn.

You say shells...while they will hide in shells if large enough, they're really not shell dwellers. Offer a variety of caves. Some folks have had good success with breeding bells.

I've seen a colony done and even done it myself to a certain extent. You want at least 3 males for that.

Mine did spawn in large shells (tonno shells) when given a choice and I've seen many professional breeders use whelk shells standing on end (point up) to breed them.

Shells are nice because you can remove the shell with both female and fry easily as long as you get your timing right.

Remember your hospital tank and isolation when one darkens and hides. How large is the tank? They need room when choosing mates.

Thank for the replies.
Yea at the moment they are just over year old hmm alittle over inch some few just under figure be the females.
Tank is 4 feet long got huge shells and also caves made.
What do you mean hospital tank. Mean I should remove him?
I do have many other tang tanks. I know once I need to remove extra males I got other tanks I hope they will fit in with like one is my kavala front tank other is tropheus with sifters both 6 feet tank other extra tank with room with featherfins.
Yea he is dark in colour figure stress from others?

It is very possible for his tank mates to kill him, so watch and remove if necessary to save his life. Stress is a killer.

Usually when you remove a stressed or sick fish to recover he is alone in the tank.
