I have never been inside the retail location, this review is based on online sales. I have ordered from Wet Spot multiple times. Bought Hueseri, Saulosi, Moori Blue Dolphins, among others. No complaints with fish quality, And always arrives next day before noon. Shipping is cheaper than I've gotten anywhere else, and faster too. I will continue doing business with them.
We just had our 1st "in person" visit yesterday to the Wetspot (have also mail ordered and had excellent results). The store was amazing. It has lots of display tanks (both fish and planted) and clean sales tanks full of a wide variety of fish from cichlids to tropicals, many rare. Aquascaping items abound from beautiful plant selections, woods of different shapes and sizes, and huge variety of stone is also available. A great stock of supplies including filters, heaters, nets, etc. etc. are also available. Tanks for sale can be found in a great variety of sizes and shapes many with full setups available for purchase. I have no doubt we will return to the store whenever we are in the Portland area and we will probably plan a trip just for a reason to visit there again.
I could only wish we had a LFS like this in my area (I certainly miss the Aquarium Center)and I only wish I could visit this shop. I would be hard pressed to find a finer selection of fish in the entire country. If you are looking for rare fish look no further, I ordered some Danio jaintianensis and at the time believe they were the only shop in the country carrying them and who knows maybe they still are. Yep I mail ordered and could not be happier. Fish arrived nicely packaged and in perfect condition. Fish are currently thriving and believe there has been some spawning.
My husband and I have gone there multiple times for stock, food and other fish supplies. Most of the time our experience has been really good, but definitely make sure you already know what you want before you arrive and make sure you quiz the person who helps you a bit to make sure that they know what they're talking about. There's at least one employee who thinks he's an expert on cichlids but clearly does not know his stuff. We ran into him on several occasions, and every time we spoke to him, he told us something else that was 100% wrong (for example, that L. similis and L. multifasciatus are the same species, and that P. demasoni is not an herbivore).
"Yeah... Great place for fish, especially Cichlids"
Looks like this place hasn't been reviewed in a while. Here's a current state...
Awesome 500g African display tank - now the top of my to-do list!
Very large selection.
Quality fish - both Cichlids and community fish.
Clean and healthy appearing tanks.
Prices were reasonable, but not rock bottom.
Staff was knowledgeable - though they told me the Exochochromis Anagenys would only reach 5" lol.
Detailed receipt with scientific names.
Detailed release instructions.
They can be very busy on the weekends - I recommend a weekday visit.
Overall very pleased. Unless something drastic happens - I will now do all my aquarium related shopping here.
fishwolfe has used this retailer 10 or more times.

"guess i went on a bad day"
recently my experience hasn't been so great.they do have nice stock and you can find a deal if you look.but the staff recently has been lacking in promptness.the wife and i waited close to 20mins before i had to ask them again for help.i have been going to this shop for years and i will continue because there is really no alternative.but the customer service really has fallen through the floor the last few times i've been there.
This is the best store in the NW for African Cichlids. The staff is helpful and very knowledgable about the fish. The owner has a passion for A. Cichlids and it shows with the incredible stock and the best variety you can find. I highly recommend that all Cichlid lovers buy their fish at the Wet Spot.
I was referred to The Wet Spot by forum-member Pam Chin, and I am very thankful that she told me about it. The store is easy to find, with parking right up the street. I walked in and immediately felt like a country-boy in the big-city. Fish, fish and more FISH! Fish I didnt even know existed. They had tanks from 500g all the way down to 5g. And I was afraid that with such a big store, I would be lost in the shuffle. But in less than 5 minutes, 3 of the 5 employees came and talked to me all the way in the back corner of the store to see if I needed help. The salesperson I spoke with helped me identify and select the best of the available species I wanted. They even printed out lots of material for me to read, explained the policies and even took time to hear about my tank and my interests in the hobby. Also their prices were great! They had numerous sizes available too. From fry all the way to adults, which made it nice to incorporate my new fish with my existing, so that I dont have small juveniles mixing in with large adults, etc. If you are near Portland, Oregon and need Cichlids, The Wet Spot is the place to go, they also have tetras and other fish, but I didnt take time to look at them, I spent probably 20 minutes looking at their cichlid tanks, and I didnt even see all of them. I've never been treated that well at any store, kind of wished they sold more than fish! :-)
I am from Utah and while visiting Oregon I had to find a fish store that had cichlids just to look at their selection. All I can say is WOW! They have some beautiful fish and if I wasn't flying Southwest when I returned home I would have bought a few and brought them back. There aren't any fish stores in my area that even compare to this. They also had a great selection of other fish as well and they all looked extremely healthy!
The Wet Spot is quite possibly the best LFS in Oregon. Their variety of Africans is wonderful. They have the best variety of Tanganyikan cichlids that I've ever found. They also get in some wonderful unusual livebearers and tetras, as well as a great variety of rare plecos. The owners and the employees are very helpful and knowledgeable. I was a great fan of the store when I lived in Portland, and now I drive an hour and a half just to get there when I want fish. Nowhere else I've been has measured up to The Wet Spot.
