"Best current fish magazine"
TFH is the best fish magazine available in the USA. It's the only one I subscribe to.

I've subscribed to Aquarium Fish in the past, but got tired of the overall beginner level of the articles, and the lack of meat. FAMA isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

I read each issue of TFH cover to cover. Like most aquarists, I'm interested in lots of different types of fish, so I enjoy the monthly columns on species like cichlids, live bearers, catfish, saltwater, etc.
The Q&A columns each month (saltwater, freshwater, plants, cichlids, etc.) are great 90% of the time, but sometimes the writers just don't get to the point. I shudder to think how a beginner would understand (or not) those answers. But just one of Jack Whatley's excellent monthly Discus Q&A sessions can make you forget about a year's worth of minor annoyances.

The articles are usually pretty good. I enjoy reading about the wide variety of species, collecting trips, and aquarium techniques the authors cover. Most of the authors seem to have extensive experience in their topic.

One recent exception was an article about breeding the saltwater Banggai Cardinal, by someone who had found 13 fry in his tank but lost them after 30 days and hasn't had a repeat spawn. That wouldn't qualify for breeders points at most fish clubs, let alone a feature article!

These problems are the exception, not the rule. TFH is worth suscribing to. I just renewed.

"Have read since the seventies, has always improved"
Has had several articles over the years about fish including several cichlids just before the fish reaches the market.Always a good place to go for early info before you find deeper info on a new fish.

"I enjoy my subscription"
Though I sometimes disagree with the information provided, and I sometimes get bored with their topics...

...I have to say, it's about the best aquarium publication around. Sometimes there is an issue that is just really good. That's usually the annual cichlid issue. :)

"great publication"
take aquarium fish magazine and triple its size... take fresh water and marine aquarium magazine and cut out the #%$&, poor photos, and dumb articals and you have tropical fish hobbiest.

i have read AFM for about 2 years and its good.. but i finish it in about an hour. TFH provides very good coverage on all aspects of the hobby. it is a tad expensive and seems less avarilible compred to AFM but its definitly worth it.

this is a great gift!

"Get a Subscription!"
Three names that say it all, in my opinion:
David Boruchowitz
Jack Wattley
Ad Konings
-
Editor In Chief, and two Contributing Editors that have their own forum's in this magazine. If you want to see the latest and best news about Cichlids?
This magazine is definitely where you'll find it.

"Best Freshwater Monthly"
Great photos, interesting articles, and a large devotion to the overall freshwater hobbiest. Obviously when you cover the entire hobby things are going to be left out, but luckily they do a nice job covering most Cichlid aspects, and some of the photos are jaw-dropping! Very little ads as well, very easy to get info.
