I got a proquatics 1600 from Petsmart for $35 on sale. It's easy to use. A bit hard to open, although you don't need a screwdriver like girly man said up there.

I am rewriting my review after having used the filters for more than 7 years now. The filters are still running strong and quiet as ever. The only issue I have had is the impellers going bad but one impeller replacement in 7 years is not bad. Opening the filter is easy for me but I understand how it could be tough for a woman. It does take some strength to pry open. Water flow is great, quality is great and I could not be happier with the product.
I have used the 1600 on my 50 gal. for 2.5 years now and the only real complaint I have is that maintenance is a little tricky. The plastic connectors are a little touchy - DON'T over tighten! and you need a prybar to open the canister. On the other hand, I like that you can see when it is getting dirty because the canister is clear. I also like the internal basket that holds the filter media. I couple it with a Biowheel 400 and the combination works great. I wouldn't hesitate to buy again, but now I have the means to get an Eheim.
Had this filter for several years - a couple of which its sat in the shed being unused as it's so appalling to work with.
Very hard to open - need to use screw driver and about 20 minutes or more just to get it open. Hard to prime without getting water everywhere. Air locks very hard to get rid off, and always draws air from somewhere. Hose valves very easy to over tighten, and then they can snap around the thread or not seal properly. Hose taps won't always open properly - can jam halfway (had to replace one that always did it after the 3 time of being closed). The basket inside the canister is very flimsy and the screw on top breaks very quickly.
Very hard to get to the impeller - the cover is held on very tightly (by friction). I ended up sanding mine down so it was possible to open it without 2 people pulling on it with the canister pump head clamped in a vice.
On the plus side it has good water flow, doesn't need cleaning to often (Thank god!) and polishes the water really well - i keep it stuffed full of filter wool on my mbuna tank and open it once every 3 months or so to clean. Also it has never leaked (both of my Fluvals have).
I bought this product as an Interpet Prime 40 (900l/h). At the price I paid I would arguably say it was the best in it's class. Maintenance is a pain but the water was always clear. it is a bit fragile, so you need to be careful when handling.
The filter worked great for me but the canister broke when I opened the top, you cant buy a new canister you need to buy a whole new one.I wouldnt buy a new one of these at all.

"Prime 30 (Proquatics 2400)"
I've got a Prime 30 (back when renaissance distributed these Hydor products). Back then I bought it online for MUCH less then they sell the 2400 for now. I've had it for over 4.5 years and have been quite happy. For a while it was my ONLY filter on my 55g, and maintainance was a pain, as it would clog up quickly and require cleaning, however now that it is a secondary filter (to an emp 400) It almost never clogs up, and has provided quite good filtration for me.
Unfortunately since it is ONLY distributed by Petsmart the price is now much higher on this product, and I think for the price you can get a better filter these days.
I use the 1600 on my 40 gallon cichlid tank. The only good thing I can say about this canister is that it keeps my tank water crystal clear; other than that it is a pain in the rear. The maintenance with this canister takes longer than it would with the Fluval--which is cheaper I might add--and the self-priming mechanism is not as reliable or as effective as I would have expected for the money. All that said, save your money and go with the Fluval or scrape together a few more bucks, learn a little German, and get yourself an Eheim
