Perfect for home or office or any location, the silent-operating Eclipse Hex 5 is the only aquarium of its kind with total three-stage filtration - the same high-efficiency filtration employed in our much larger aquatic systems. And the Eclipse Hex 5 has Marineland's patented BIO-Wheel, undisputed leader in biological filtration.
The super-efficient Hex 5 provides the best in mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration...aerating and filtering the water seven times each hour. Water is pumped silently through the Eclipse Rite-Size Filter Cartridge (packed with new faster-acting Black Diamond Premium Activated Carbon) and over the BIO-Wheel, where beneficial bacteria work to remove more toxic ammonia and nitrite with every turn.
The hexagonal tank delivers optimum design profile and leakproof durability. All filtration media is inside a top-mounted access hood -- no hoses, no filter boxes, no noisy air pumps. The contoured light hood includes a convenient front access port for easy feeding and plugs into any standard household outlet. And every Hex 5 Kit comes complete with Marineland Labs' BIO-Blend Tropical Fish Food, BIO-Safe Tap Water Conditioner and BIO-Coat Stress Defenseplus, an informative beginners fishkeeping guide.
Five-Gallon Aquarium, Incandescent Lamp, Rite-Size "Z" Filter Cartridge, BIO-Blend Tropical Fish Food, BIO-Safe Tap Water Conditioner, BIO-Coat Stress Defense, Beginners Fishkeeping Guide. Certified Flow: 35 GPH
I bought this as a starter tank for my 8 year old daughter. The tank offers a good view and the lighting is good for the size of the tank. The filtration is horrible. The filter pressure slows down every day or two causing the bio-wheel to stop. I have an emperor 400 on one of my larger tanks and I never had a problem with it. I expected more from this tank.
20-Mar-08 update. I had so many problems with the filter that I threw it away. I installed a Fluval 1 in the tank and everything has been working great!
I have owned this piece of junk for atleast 3 months and it does not filter very well. I had three juvenile P.Socolofi's in it to grow out a little and the water stayed constantly dirty. I had to do 20% water changes in it every 2 to 3 days to keep the water clean and the filter system just couldn't keep up. This thing is built very cheap and it ain't worth the money. It would be better if they had a better filtering system IMO.
Take a look at the picture, there is a tiny little hatch on the front to feed your fish, otherwise you have to take the top off entirely to get any real access. It has cheap incandescent lighting, and the bio-wheel will often stop turning. On the other hand the Eclipse 6 (curved front) is a wonderful little aquarium with fluorescent lighting, a much larger access area (though still not huge by any means)and a bio-wheel you can rely on. My advice, forget the 5 Hex and get the 6 Curved Front, and I expect you will be very pleased.
I like the hex look and how it is easy to transport to and from college, and that it is all in one... i dont like how i get ammonia easy and if you dont have it all the way full the food will just collect and not be pushed by current... other then that have had little to no fish die... good take
As a college student who used to have 2 20 gallon tanks and a 100 gallon tank while in High School, going to college meant I would have to look at other options to keep in the hobby. This system provided me with a low cost and easily maintainable setup that I've had for over a year. The water is always crystal clear and the ammonia levels are nonexistant. The kit is the highest quality kit I have ever seen in a setup this small.
While the filter pads are a bit pricey, and I think the horizontal placement decreases its effectiveness, I can say that after using this tank for over 18 months, that its not an issue. The amount of fish I keep in a tank this small don't create enough waste to clog the filter very quickly. And the biowheel is one of my favorite features as always.
If you need a tank to brighten up a small area, I don't think you'd be dissappointed with this one.
I did find that I could rotate the filter cartridge around... but the pad was still a weak point in the filtration.
My issue was with the lighting... due to the filtration unit (I also found the impeller position to be too obvious), the bulb could not be centered, and the lighting was concentrated to the front/side. This didn't really compliment the growth of stem plants in the back of the tank. I'm being picky, but these small issues bothered me in an otherweise good setup
If I had the choice again, I would buy a regular 5 gallon rectanguler tank instead.
The tank is very easy to operate. Changing filters and taking apart the system to clean the pump can be done in seconds. The three stage filter works very effectively and keeps the water in great quality. The only problem I have is with the water output onto the filter cartrige. The water pumped up to the filter is released into one corner of the filter. Within a week, this one corner of the filter become clogged with algae and renders the mechanical stage useless. To add to this, the cartrige cannot be rotated to even out usage of corners due to the filter's substructure. So, to avoid this, I found it is good to keep the tank very clean and free of algae. Other than that I absolutely love the tank.
