Males aggressively patrol their territories. In the wild, they feed by nibbling from the algal mat in a manner similar to Labidochromis spp. Males lack any black markings in the dorsal fin and females are brown to dark brown without any trace of black markings. The orange color, as in all cichlids, can vary from orange to red depending on diet.
