Well, usually the male has the Black fin, and the female has less, if any!! However, not very accurate until they are a little older.

Typically the male will be a bit larger, have a much deeper color and darker pelvic and anal fins; however, you can not be sure until the reach around 2.5". I did have the owner of my lfs pick out 1 male and 3 females at 1.5", so it's posible with the trained eye. Another alternate method is venting. Here's a good artical on venting.

The female will be a bit more plump, unless holding, in which case she will be slender with a buldge under the mouth. Her anal and ventral fins will also be lighter in color; however, they may still be black.
Here's another pic of a female that's holding. You should be able to make out the dark fins on the pelvic

Can you use anal fin spots or not to sex yellow labs? _________________ TIMBERWOLVES ALL THE WAY THIS YEAR! |

Hello,
I am getting ready to start up a Yellow Lab tank, which will be in a 46 gallon bow tank, and I am looking for the more peaceful/colorful cichlids to accomidate them.
Thanks. |

I've kept Ps. Saulosi before with my Yellow lab group, and they all worked out well. At the moment I have Lab. Hongi, some would suggest aginst keeping two labidos together because of risk of hybridization, but with plenty of females of each my group keeps to their own. I also have a small group of Cyno. Afra Cobue in with the Yellows too, alittle bit on the aggressive side but they don't cause much problems. |

Although people frequently talk about dark fins, eggspots, and other features none of them are reliable when it comes to yellow labs. I have seen males without egg spots and females with them. I have also seen females with darker fins than males or even richer colors. In addition to seeing a holding female, the only reliable method is to vent. _________________ Come join us at the Madison Area Aquatic Hobbyists (MAAH) meeting October 24th to hear Brian Terreano talk about native killifish. | basically anything mellow u can put in there, though yellows are a mbuna, mbuna usually hold their own pretty well, I've kept them with redtops, electric blue johannis, auratus, peacpcks, copadichromis borleyi, kenyis, altolamprologus, like any catfish, bumble bee cats, synos, clown loaches, never had good luck with corys though, they never make it in my african tanks, thats whats wotked for me though, i think u always take a chance, some fish are just crazier than others and u cant tell what kinda lil monster ur gna get next.. |

| oh ya bandwidth and color brilliance alond with relative size is usually a good indicator of sex, but i guess venting is surefire. |

What does "holding " mean.
Are these fish mouthbrooders?

yea holding is, they are holding babies in there mouths, LOL.
I have a rather large yellow lab 3+", and another 1.5" both different sources, i noticed on the large one that only her dorsal fin is black but the bottem 2 that make a "V'' shape are not, but on the smaller one all fins are black, dorsal, underneath. Is this a way to tell the female from male or no? _________________
