schooling fish with african cichlids??

Postby Burscha » Sun Feb 27, 2011 12:53 am

I'm a newb and just set up a 20 gallon tank with 3 african cichlids. I'd like to add some small schooling fish as well but im worried that the cichlids will terrorize them. Are there some types of small schooling fish that fit well with cichlids? If so, can i add them to a 20 gallon tank with the three cichlids in it already?

Which cichlids do you have, and what are the dimensions of your 20 gallon aquarium? What are the size of these cichilds?

Lots of people use cory cats in their cichlid tanks.
100g Iodotropheus Sprengerae, Cynotilapia sp Lion Mara Rocks, Metriaclima sp Elongatus Chewere, Pseudotropheus sp. 'Polit' Lion's Cove, Tropheops sp Elongatus Boadzulu, Petrotilapia sp. "small blue"

20g Pearly Ocellatus

I'd avoid the cories for this reason. But if you have a large enough tank some other schooling fish might work. Fogelhund has experience with these mixes, but tank dimensions and "which cichlids" are important to know.
