Fry question

Postby bowfishing » Tue Jun 19, 2012 11:40 am

Right now I have about 80 to 100 fry that are about 1/2 inch long and about 6 weeks old in one of my 10 gallon tanks.
Two of my other fish just spit out there fry last night. So I have about 80 to 100 more.
The question is I want to take the first set of fry and move them into my 30 gallon and put a divider inside and put the new ones in their as well. Do you think I would stress them out by moving them from one tank to another?
Thanks,
For any information given.

No moving them would not stress them out, as long as the tank is cycled. I do not trust those tank dividers unless they are siliconed into place. I would just move the bigger fry into the 30 and leave your smaller ones in the 10 until they are big enough to go into the 30 with the other fish. What are you planning on doing with all of the fry?

Selling them.
I have about 100 OB Peacocks, about 30 Haplochromis SP (Thick Skin), and about 30 Obliquiden Zebra.

I juggle fry all the time. Of course they are stressed but they fare well. Just take into account all the normal considerations you would moving adults.

I did have one Rusty fry, maybe 3-4 weeks old, that apparently died while I was trying to catch him. I figured I squashed him with the edge of the net. He was dead. Floating on the bottom stiff. I picked him up by hand and put him in the bucket with the rest of them. He floated to the bottom upside down not moving.

About ten minutes later after finishing preping the tank they were going into - I looked in the bucket and there was no sign of the 'dead' one. All the fish were swimming fine. I think he fainted from fear lol.

Cannot not get the photobucket to work on my iPad.
I moved them yesterday. I did a water change on my 150g and put about 20 gallons of water in the 30 gallon from the 150 and the 10 gallons I took for the fry tank and moved them. They are doing good and eating well. As soon as I was done yesterday I feed them and they all came to the top of the tank to eat.

For me the question is, is a 30G big enough for 200 fry. I'd want a bigger tank.
