Live plants

Postby JohanniMan » Sat Apr 21, 2012 6:21 pm

Im redoing my 125 once again lol, I was wondering if peacocks/haps can have live plants or will they tear em up and can you have live plants in crushed coral or is it better to have them in sand?

I have them together, but the haps and peacocks do nibble the plants. I use a plant substrate, but there may be certain plants you can grow in sand.

Going to make a run to LFS today anyone have any suggestions on taller live plants that I can use in a sand substrate (play sand)

I'm having mixed luck with plants. My larger anubias barteri are left alone as are my jungle val but they nibbled at my anubias nana plants, especially the new leaves. My amazon sowrds are pretty much a tasty treat and they tend to pick at my java fern as well.

I have amazon swords growing in PFS at the moment...

they are holding their own but I need to get some real root tabs for them as the jobe's plant spikes I have been using do not seem to be getting the job done. For the most part the cichlids leave them alone (peacocks, haps, and a few mbuna) but the plants are somewhat tattered mainly because of a BN pleco I think. I have tried crinum before as well and it does well for a few months before degrading and rotting (I do have the bulb above the sand layer). I REALLY want to make jungle val work but it always rots and the fish pull it up no matter how many rocks I place around the base of the plants.
