I found this guy in a "mixed Mbuna" tank of a local fish store. I bought him because I thought he was a Hap. But not that he is coloring up, I think it is more likely a Victoria Basin Cichlid. Anyone able to give him a proper name?

There is no way to tell unless he is fully colored and your male is not. Looking at your pictures, it could be several things or even a cross-breed. Does he ever show vertical barring?

I am thinking http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... hp?id=1572 but prob best to get him coloured up and older before guessing but with all the vic hybrids about you will prob never be sure.
Almost as bad as buying a Mbuna from a mixed tank.
All the best James

Wow....the Xystichromis phytophagus is a very colorful fish. Guess I scored! He's going in an all male tank anyway and I will see how he changes as he grows. I'm kind of new to this, but I could tell he wasn't a Mbuna. Maybe I'll post again in a couple months.
