Central American Cichlids • Is my JD male or female?

I would say it is a female, based on the blue in the gill plate. But it also seems to have more overall spangling on the body that is not common with female JD'S. But I would still go with female. How large is she and how long have you had her? She looks great.

Thanks! I have had her for 4 years. She is 6 1/2". I'm really surprised to learn he is a she! Are females typically more docile than males?

I have a female JD that looks very similar to yours. They are line bred to have more coloration...and I think that it's a big improvement over the typical female. And yes, in general, the females are more mellow than males.

I agree with the smudging on the gill plate to a female trait but the only sure way to know is to try to get a look at her egg tube. Its simple from there
