|
|
So my demasoni had its fry a little sooner than i expected and im not sure what the best plan of action would be.
I really would like to keep them all as i need alot more in my tank.
I have a 29 gallon extra tank thats not cycled or anything but would filling it with the main tanks water be an option?
I have 2 aquaclear 110's on it and was thinking i could take a bunch of the ceramic bio things out of them and put them in the tank, would that work for cycling it?
I have a cheap filter thats been running on the main tank for about 3 days also that is rated for a 10 gallon tank, i was hopping i could throw that on the 29 gallon and cover the intake with a sponge of some sort or maybe buy one of the filters that runs off an air pump.
Any advice would be much appreciated, need to figure something out asap!
Also any advice on how to care for the fry would be amazing. |

| You nailed it. Use water from your main tank along with some of its filter media, maybe even some of the substrate. |

iplaywiththeemotions is right, used filter material or substrate will work. Tank water does nothing. A filter that has been running on an established tank will do nothing. It takes about 2 weeks to establish a colony of bacteria in a new filter by running it on an established tank.
You can just feed them crushed up adult food 2-3 times daily. More frequent water changes will maximize their growth. _________________ 125G Calvus, Caudopunctatus, J Gombe, Brevis, Leleupi, Tret, Cyp Kerenge

I took a few pounds of substrate from the main tank, its sand though so from what i understand sand dont help much with bacteria, took about 20-30 of the pieces of ceramic from the aquaclear 110's. half are just sitting in the tank and other half are inside the small filter.
And I also snag'd a few small pieces of rock to try and help a little bit.
I'm a little bummed out as i only found 3 fry, i'm guessing some of the fish found them before i did but then the demasoni that had them was very small, just over an inch. So not so sure on how many they have and that was the first time she has had them.
And just one small question on the feeding, is there any type of plant i could put in there that they could feed off of? I have some sinking veggie pellets but i'm just very paranoid about of them not eating it all and having it go bad and lower the water quality.
This is my first time with fry, sorry for my ignorance. |

Sand has bacteria, but as any other substrate most will be on the surface. So scrape off the surface, LOL.
Test daily for ammonia and nitrite since you are not sure of your biofilter, but with only 3 fry you should be good.
A plant will not suffice. You need to clean the tank and remove excess food. Only put in an amount the size of the fry eye with each feeding. _________________ 125G Calvus, Caudopunctatus, J Gombe, Brevis, Leleupi, Tret, Cyp Kerenge
