Amongst race car hobbyists... Some people buy race cars... some people build them...
What kind of fish hobbyist are you? a buyer or a builder...
One person's "too expensive" is the next guys "good investment"...
I personally think electronics in my filter to monitor performance is about as silly as putting them in my steak to make sure it's cooked. But to the guy who doesn't really understand what his filter is doing, or supposed to be doing, he may think they are invaluable (although I think it's a bunch of marketing hype to fool him)...
I know I could put together a more efficient filter for a fraction the price... but then again I enjoy tinkering and trying new things, other's may rather a system they can plug in and not worry about.
Just like I think it's crazy to pay someone to deliver and assemble a tank... where there are others who think it's a wise investment...
It all depends on who ya are and what your looking for... _________________ The happier you make your fish the happier they will make you

they seem to have an extremely low flow rate for the price and for that i would say maybe look for something else _________________ 55 Gal Malwai/Victoria 29 Gal Haplochromis sp.44 "Red Tail" fry tank 29 Gal soon to be Tanganyika 1.5 Gal Crowntail Beta |

I really like the idea of these filters but for 500 dollars they can keep them. I will buy 5 XP3 filters. _________________ 125 Gallon Peacock/Hap

Actually, I don't think it even heats the water. They say the low flow rate isn't as important as "efficient" flow, but either way, I believe its hype. In interviews, they even admit that they count on some of the appeal of the filter to be its sleekness....
I already commented on this in a thread a while back, but basically, this is the "i-pod" of filters; sleek, tons of "useful" (useless) features, and very very cool commercials with slick music and lighting.... |

I have to say I am attracted to the easy access of the mechanical filtration, which means I'd be more likely to properly maintain that aspect. However, I'd be equally likely to neglect the bio media for a very long time (which is probably okay as long as the mech filtration is seen too regularly).
Still... $500+ is a LOT of money for a filter. When I can get 2 FX5s for that price... I'll pass... |

Looks cool. Though they will never get my 500.00!
I would have been way more excited if they expanded the FX5 line, say FX1,2,3,4, and maybe a FX6 _________________ 180- Hap tank.

Single disc, CD players cost well over a grand when they first came out...
How much are they now...
If you have to be on the cutting edge, you can`t cry about your wallet bleeding.
Just me, but no way would I put that much money into a filter....
Even if it made my coffee and washed my truck _________________ -----John-----

and juiced carrots and apples into a health drink, julienned potatoes in 5 seconds, absorbed 15X its own weight of liquid, relieved lower back pain, doubled as a hearing aid, helped your kid improve 2 grade levels or better, AND keep all your fruits and vegetables fresh 10X longer then normal........
P.S. Where can you get an FX5 for $250? Or am I just paying "Canadian" prices? |
