Sexing Z-Rocks

Postby MyNamesAJeff » Mon Mar 27, 2017 11:12 pm

Hi All,

Have a Z-Rock that I bought as a juvenile (~1 inch) on 10/18/16. While at the store (which really specializes in African Cichlids) they were able to try and vent one out for me.. which is suspect at that age I know - but these guys are really good.

Anyways here I am 5 months later - and this guy has grown a ton.. but i'm worried I may have a female in an all male tank.

Does anyone have any experience raising these guys from fry? What should I expect as far when they will start to show male / female features?

Thanks!

Same as almost all Malawi cichlids, all fish start out looking female then males gain male characteristics with maturity. How fast a male matures depends on pecking order... what other fish are in the tank? If it is the smallest, might be the slowest to color up.

If it is over 3" by now certainly seems like a likely female.

It's going to be a male. The pointed anal fin and visible red on the dorsal fin is a telltale sign for a male.
