Saulosi and White Top Hara in 60g 4 foot tank?

Postby binnyskyle » Mon Jan 09, 2017 7:36 pm

Can a group of Saulosi and White Top Hara successfully be kept together even though the males are both blue barred? The third species I am looking at is OB Red Zebra.

Thanks.

I had hara with blue barred fish for several years. They lived but they color up better in a separate tank with fish that are not blue barred.

Is there a different blue or maybe white fish you would recommend instead of the white top hara to go with the saulosi and ob red zebra? I would like white labs but read they often cross breed with zebras. I prefer non drab females.

Blue= Ps. Socolofi?
Whitish= Lab. Perlmutts, Albino Socolofi?

To be really honest, almost any of the Mbunas will cross with each other.

I disagree with this statement. I've kept a few different tanks of mbuna over the last 10+ years - always mixed species tanks, 3-6 species per tank. By stocking good ratios of females to males and avoiding related or similar-colored species within a tank (often with the advice of members of this forum), I've never once observed a male and female of different species spawning together. I've also grown out many fry and never found any inconsistencies in the offspring.

Pretty much all mbuna are biologically capable of mating with another mbuna species, but they much prefer their own species (or very closely-colored or closely-related) if given that choice.

I had some Saulosi with my Cynos before I sold them. Definitely prevented the White Tops from coloring up. For whatever that's worth.

Did not mean that they will 100% for sure mix, but they can. I too have mixes of different species and agree that they prefer their own females, but the possibility does exist.

What are the dimensions? For maingano some have better success with 48x18 or larger...they are aggressive.

I decided to go with Maingano, Saulosi, and Red Zebras. I was able to get 1m/5f of each around 2 inches apiece. They are being delivered on Saturday.

Footprint is that of a 55 gallon but the tank is taller. I have a very large amount of quality texas holey rock and lots of granite cichlid caves so I am hoping this will work. Over 1,000 gallons an hour filtration.
