Other than organics what does carbon remove? I have well water and I was thinking of pretreating the water through a carbon filter. Also I'm kicking around the idea of collecting rainwater. With the plan to run through carbon filtration before using.

Activated carbon is like the word "juice". Many kinds, some good, some not so good.

The good stuff will adsorb volatile organics, ammonia, copper, etc. The cheap stuff will not...

For what you are planning, the easiest way might be to get a cannister water filter (of the type used for drinking water) and use the carbon cartridges available for them.

BillD the proiblem with that is volume. I will be running about 1000 gallons so water changes are going to average 75 gallons or more a day.

Wow!! Sounds like you need to chk a 'whole house' type of potable water filter system. Combo activated charcoal water filter, which absorbs potentially toxic chemicals & ultraviolet water filters use radiation to eliminate the risk of bacteria and other biological contaminants. It's gonna be pricey purifying that much water daily. "T"

You can buy high quality carbon in bulk so it really shouldn't be a concern.

most laboratory or Reef Aquarium grade activated carbon is good. I don't personally pay the premium price for Matrix, but it's good carbon if you are willing to pay.
