Does my Dovii look healthy? Male or female?

Postby MikeyPhonz » Fri Mar 17, 2017 11:04 am

He keeps scratching his body against the substrate and decor. He has no white spots or signs of ich other than him scratching. I've been simultaneously treating the water with API ich cure and melafix. Also would you be able to help me identify the sex? Please and thanks Cichlid owners! I'll post pictures in the next 10 minutes. I created this account 5 minutes ago and just learned you have to jump through hoops to post a picture.

Welcome to C-f

Why are you treating the tank with meds?
The behavior you're describing is called 'flashing.' Do you know your water parameters? Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, gH, kH, pH?

Looks very young.

Are the fins always clamped? Could be early onset of ich. What temp are you keeping it at?

Thanks bro. I treated it because i thought he couldve been infected even if it wasnt ich and the mel/pima fix said they treat a broad range of infections. and he was doing it at a time when the parameters were ideal. he hasnt been doing it as much since i treated the water but he does every so often

Some flashing is normal. Excessive flashing can point to something wrong like your water, which is why I asked about your readings
