This is my first post here, but an urgent one.
Our 6 year old cichlid (we are unsure of the exact breed) has had a few bouts of pop eye, but this one has become especially serious. He has been ill for over a month, and an area over the eye has now developed what we think is ulcerative dermatitis. We have changed out 50% of the water, treated it as best we could, but with no results. He has now stopped eating. Any help or suggestions to save our little friend is extremely appreciated!

Hi there,
We're going to need some more information. Tank size, tank mates, a picture so we can see what kind of cichlid this is, and we need to know more about your water chemistry. Please provide your pH, NO3, NH3, and NO2 values. If you don't have a test kit, you can bring a water sample into your local fish store.

Even without the above info, a few bits of info would be helpful. What is the regular water change regimen? How much and how often? Get the water clean before treatment, by doing a large (or several large) water change(s). Reducing the number of pathogens in the water helps with any treatment. Is the 50% water change the norm, or just because of the treatment?

It is a 55 gallon tank. He has no tank mates- he'd very agressive and eats them all. The water is changed every three to 4 weeks. I'm not sure The ph levels at present...

It might be to late
If you only had one fish and if you fed it allot and only did water changes every month maybe the nitrates got to him..if so it might be to late.He is already stressing, any medication you give it now might kill him.And giving him less medication wont be strong enough
Your water parameters would be more of help as they play a big part on the fishes health.
