Help! I need to have this fish identified

Postby rmiranda18 » Mon Jan 09, 2017 10:55 pm

In my 44 gallon tank, I purchased 2 of these fishes when they were very juvenile - less than an inch. They have grown to an inch plus, and is a beautiful multi-colored fish. Who would have thunk it when I bought them for $3.99 each - assorted juvenile mbunas. I have not been able to match this up to any pictures of Zebra. Can someone give me a heads up as to what I have here? Image

Most assorted stock are hybrids of some kind. Could be a mix of many different species.

Thanks for the response - but now the possibility of finding females are close to nill? Unless the egg spots are not really indicative of it being a male. Do you believe that it is a Metriaclima at least? It is a very sharp looking fish though....

Did i find a match? What is your opinion? One of the few Metriaclima that doesnt have a picture in the Species Profile is the Metriaclima Auroras - I performed an image search and found the following. Granted it is mature once its about 3" long and mine is definitely a juvie - it looks very similar. What are your thoughts?

It may have Met. blood, but does not look like a true Aurora. It may even have Lab. Hongi blood too.
Finding females for any Mbuna is easy, they can and will cross with any female, that is why Hybrids are so common.

No, that isn't an aurora. Just an attractive hybrid, from a mixed tank.

I think i have the same fish you have. We call them ice blue cichlids. I think I have a male and a female but I bought them thinking they were both male.

Not Greshakei for sure, which is sometimes sold as "Ice Blue".

Not even clear what is up with the barring, kinda looks like an OB Zebra type male with traces of barring, but that might be a wrong impression.

It is an assorted cichlid for a reason and it is 3.99 for a reason. That reason is because it is not a pure identifiable fish - that doesn't mean that it is not pretty, because I like the looks of that fish.
