2 ID's Needed

Postby Ohio Cichlid Lover » Sun Jul 15, 2012 4:10 pm

I'm usually pretty good at identifying New World Cichlids but this one (the first 3 pictures) is giving me trouble. Looks sorta like a Ram but it's too big. The last 3 pics I'm sure someone will be able to ID. I have a guess but there are a few cichlids with similar looks so i will leave it to the experts.

First I'm not sure but would compare to 'Geophagus' brasiliensis

Second is a Johanni type mbuna, probably a mix. Commonly seen as "Electric Blue Johanni", they often get paler when adult like that.

I'm thinking Johanni too but there are so many similar fish it's hard to nail it down. The first one.....Geophagus???.....You may be right. I've never had this much trouble ID'ing a New World Cichlid...

First is a 'Geophagus' brasiliensis complex species. There are undescribed populations, as well as a couple of described species, but generally commercial populations are referred to as brasiliensis. The few similar Gymnogeophagus have the blue spangles arranged in clear horizontal bands.
