Another Mystery Fish

Postby Ohio Cichlid Lover » Sun Jul 01, 2012 7:01 pm

Girlfriend rescued this little guy from Wally World. He is about 2.5" long. He looks like a skunk. Has a white horizontal whitish strip starting on his forehead going down his back and on the tips of his fins. I tried to ID him but having trouble. Here are a few pics....

Hard to tell for sure...are the top pics with the camera flash on or is that what he looks like naturally under your lights?

That's pretty much what he looks like. The interesting this about this guy is his dorsal fin. I never really noticed it on other fish (probably wasn't looking)....he has several spines on his dorsal fin and then near the end he has none?? Also you can't really see it but beginning between his eyes and extending back is a white streak. Got me stumped. Maybe his dorsal fin will help identify him.

Hormoned Hybrid, don't think it is red empress, but can see why you might say that.

It's a really cool looking fish. I think the only fish that Wally World gets that are true species is Oscars. I'd really like to find out where they get their fish so I could do some investigating....

i got a blue dolphin and a chilotilapia rhoadesii there once... they werent hormoned.. I've actually never seen any hormoned fish there but now that fogulhund mentions it it does look hormoned.. protomelas in my experience are late to color up although i have seen one very small taiwan reef at zebra7's house (sicichlids) that was colored up and trying to spawn
