What size tank do I upgrade to?

Postby Astrix » Mon Mar 20, 2017 1:25 pm

So here's what I have in my grow-out tank,

Albino oscar 4.5"
Synspilum 3"
Severum x2 4" (rehoming one unless they pair before I can)
Mexican Firemouths x2 m=3.5" f=2.5"
Salvini 2.5-3"
Convict x3 m=2.5" x2f =1.5-2" (full time supply of healthy feeder fry!)

I originally was not going to add the severum in BUT they needed a home so in my tank they went. I originally planned for a minimum of 125g but I'm thinking 150-175g would be better suited for the size of the oscar, synspilum and severum.

Anybody have any suggestions?

As big as you can go. 6', 180+. I say that mainly because of the syn.

Agree. With the Oscar and the syn, plus I'd assume at some point breeding cons you are going to need a lot of room.

Yep, I agree with all the above. A 180gal would be the minimum.

Thank you guys!! I'll start shopping!!! Any recommendations for filtration on a tank that size? Was thinking a fluval fx6 with a powerhead or two? Or should i do a sump?

Sump folk will tell to definitely do a Sump. I have no experience with them. You should be able to easily source a drilled 180. If you go the canister route, look to have 2 filters going. At least something like the FX6 or Eheim equivalent and a HOB such as an Aqua Clear 110. On a 180 I have stocked lightly with Africans, I run 2 FX5s and an AC110.

I'd run a cannister at one end and Mattenfilter on the other.
