55 gallon species only options (with current setup)

Postby Alexpol08 » Wed Mar 08, 2017 8:03 pm

Okay well my 55 gallon is currently cycling and the original stock list is 4 juliochromis, 4 caudopunctuts, and 8-12 paracyps or cyps.

But the wheels got turning and I think a species only tank would look cool.
So I'll looking got options I'm assuming with my current scape only cave dwellers would work. So are there any that essentially form a small colony? I'd like to have more than 2 pairs. In think 10-15 juliochromis gombes would look amazing, but I'm not sure that would work.

So are there any options? Thanks

Hi there,
When Cave Dwellers you do mean She'll Dwellers right? Personally, my Favourite Shell Dwellers are Neolamprologus caudopunctatus and Neolamprologus brichardi (But I'm more into the American Cichlids). Neolamprologus multifasciatus, Neolamprologus brevis, Neolamprologus caudopunctatus,Lamprologus speciosus or Lamprologus ocellatus could also be good options. And IME, the Juliochromis Gombe would work, but that's my opinion.
Good Luck!

Not shell dwellers, really any tang cichlid that prefers caves as their home.

Like what would be a good juliochromis for a species only tank? And how many would I get?

If you want more than one pair, stick with one of the smaller variants. Gombe, transcriptus, ornatus.

if you want species only, wouldn't you be better off doing some tropheus, Neolamprologus brichardi , or paracyprichromis ? Heck, I think you could even keep several Altolamprologus calvus.

A 55g tank is too small for Tropheus (IMO).
