Julidochromis transcriptus Clicking

Postby 679x » Tue Feb 14, 2017 12:22 pm

So I've been hearing these (quite loud) clicks coming from my 75g Tanganyikan tank, and up until this morning I was worried it was the tank itself and had something to do with the weight of the rocks in the tank... anyway, I no longer have to fear, because I found the unlikely source of these loud clicks.

My Julidochromis transcriptus are the ones making the sound when they bite at Omega One veggie rounds!

I know for sure that they're not touching the glass. Also, my Tropheus don't make the sound when they bite at the wafer, so I don't think it's the wafer itself. And I think most people won't notice it on their own fish, because the wafer is right next to the glass (although not touching it), so it's easier to hear it from outside the tank since it's happening right near the side glass. I don't think I could hear it if the wafer wasn't right next to the outside of the tank.

Has anyone else experienced clicking from their Julidochromis? I for sure was surprised when I figured out what was making the noise. I found a forum where someone experienced this same thing, but that was back in 2006. I just thought it was pretty interesting, and decided to share it. Anyone else hear this before?

I'm 99.9953% sure that it's the Julidochromis making the noise. As soon as they bit the wafer, it made a big click. When they stopped biting it, no click. None of my Synodontis petricola were on that side of the tank, as far as I know. I'd be very surprised if the noise wasn't coming from them, although when I first discovered it I was surprised to see that it probably WAS coming from them!
