I just bought a pair of Albino Bushy Nose Plecos. My LFS never seems to have them and they were buy one get one free so I got a nice pair. Problem is the male has taken up camp right inside a large shell inside my multi's shell bed. I moved his shell (with him in it) to the complete other side and he moved back into the multi area. Could he be eating their eggs? I don't see them attacking him or even know if they are big enough to breed but am concerned? Any ideas?
Could be. My rubber lip and clown pleco tried to hunt my occie fry at night and in the morning. Whenever the occies woke up they took vengeance, so I removed the plecos.
Do you have a good cave for the plecos? A shell small enough for multies should be too small for BNPs. They will eat any fry that they can, but usually that's not many with multies. Also, multies will choose lower level shells in a pile to breed in, so I always recommend piling shells for a multi colony.
I ordered 2 round breeding caves from ebay. They should be here any day now. The female stays away from the multi's but the male always camps out deep inside the larger shells. Hopefully the breeding caves will keep him on the other side of the tank once I put them in.
I moved the large shells to the complete other side of the tank and also piled the multi shell bed high instead of spread out. The multi's seem a little annoyed and are fighting. Some even went to the other side Maybe the smaller foot print of the shell bed is causing problems with territories. I will see how it works out after they have a night to figure it out. I really want them happy and breeding so if this doesn't work out the plecos are going into my sons tank for a while until I get them breeding.
Yeah, bickering is a good thing with multies. They seem to redraw boundaries on a daily basis, just let them figure it out. I've never known a cichlid to breed without some type of conflict, and display.
