You can find our User Agreement here.

TECHNICAL ISSUES

How do I post pictures in the forum?
Images can indeed be shown in your posts; however, there is no facility at present for uploading images directly to this board. Therefore you must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible Web server. Two sites that our members tend to use quite frequently are ImageStation.com and PictureTrail.com. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor images stored behind authentication mechanisms, e.g. Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password protected sites, etc. To display the image use the [img] tag feature when posting your message. For more specific instructions, see here.

Web page doesn't display properly.
This Web page was designed to accomodate a screen resolution of at least 800x600 and Internet Explorer 5+ browsers. Web page bugs can be reported here.

To whom do I report errors found on the Web site?
We have made every effort to ensure our information is as error free as possible; however, this is not always possible. We gladly accept any constructive criticisms or corrections regarding identifications or other content. Such comments may be sent to the administrative staff here.

Why don't the new photos for My Tank page show up?
It usually takes 1-3 days for new additions & updates to be approved by an administrator before your page will be available to the public again. If you still see your old photos after you've uploaded new ones, don't panic. You can do one of two things to quickly fix this. First try right-clicking on your page and select refresh. That should force your browser to recognize the new photos. If that does not work, try clearing your browser's cache. You can do this by selecting from the menu TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > GENERAL > DELETE FILES.

I can't get the video to play on my computer.
Most PC's will be able to view our movies. The streaming movies on this Web site are of high quality and are quite large in file size, being between 0.5 and 5 MB. Unless you have a high speed Internet connection like cable modem, satellite, or T1, you will need to allow them to download completely before trying to view them or you may be disappointed. If you can't view the movies at all, download the latest version of Windows Media Player™. It's quick, easy and free. Click here.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

What is the purpose of this site?
Cichlid-Forum is dedicated to being the most extensive and accurate source for cichlid information on the internet. Cichlid-Forum is committed to promoting the cichlid hobby and cichlid conservation. Cichlid-Forum will strive to exceed the expectations of our visitors, members, contributors and sponsors though the use of creativity and continuing dedication.

Can I submit my photos or an article to be displayed on Cichlid-Forum?
Yes, we gladly accept video, article and photograph contributions! We reserve the right to review all submissions and cannot guarantee that each and every article or photograph will get posted. All content contributions can be directed
here. Please include any pertinent information (e.g., fish name, gender, ownerís name, etc.) in your email.

Do you have scheduled Chat times?
No, we do not have scheduled chat times or topics. The chat room, however, is rarely empty and so itís not very difficult to start up a conversation or to get live help. Please be courteous and thank those who help you.

What do I have to do to win the Photo Contest?
Winners are determined by you and the other members of the site. General guidelines for rating fish pictures are as follows:

  • Quality of the photo.

  • Quality of the fish.

  • Difficulty of the photo.

  • Beauty of the fish.

  • Do NOT vote based on who the owner of the fish is.
Cheating is not tolerated. Voting is monitored for abnormalities and anything suspicious is either investigated or tossed out. There is no "prize" for winning; remember, this is just for fun. If your picture is not selected for voting or does not win, please donít be discouraged. Keep participating. On average, more than 70 photos are submitted every round and it is challenging to select only 20 for competition. Many submissions are quickly "weeded out" but would have an excellent chance of being a contender if the following suggestions were followed:

  1. Clean the glass.

  2. Get the whole fish in the shot.

  3. Turn off the lights in the room.

  4. Get the fish in focus.

  5. Make sure the subject is a healthy and good-looking specimen.

  6. Take a lot of shots and the choose the best.
What do I have to do to win the Tank of the Month Contest?
A single tank is chosen each month by the site administrators to be spotlighted as the Tank of the Month. This award is given based upon a few subjective criteria. First and foremost, the tank must look aesthetically pleasing. A tank with fluorescent blue gravel and a plastic pirate ship will never be selected. Clever and unique aquascaping are what we look for. Live plants are always a bonus. We also look for obvious forethought and planning in the building of your setup. This includes filtration, lighting, substrate, fish stocking, and maintenance. Tell us about your setup and planning. This is your chance to brag and share. So, in summary, to have your tank selected, it helps to have something unique, pleasing to the eye, and built on sound principles of good husbandry.

Can I make a donation?
The costs associated with maintaining this Web site are tremendous. To keep Cichlid-Forum running and free we must rely on sponsors. It is important to us that this Web site and all of its contents remain free and accessible to everyone. We do not solicit donations but if you would like to make a donation, we encourage you to donate instead to the
Paul V. Loiselle Cichlid Conservation Fund. If you have enjoyed your cichlids and this Web site, give back to cichlids by preserving their natural habitats. Visit our Cichlid Conservation Section of the site to learn more about how you can make a donation.
