What ratio of males to females should I
keep in a breeding colony?
Surprisingly, this answer is
quite simple. It doesn't really matter. I have kept colonies with high
ratio of males or females with great response. The main advantage of
having one or only a few males is it allows you more room for females. The
more females, the more fry you may produce. Frontosa are polygamous
spawners and are not pair-forming.
It is sometimes advantageous to
have a larger colony then a smaller one. It keeps the dominant male
directing his aggression to multiple individuals instead of just one poor
fish. □
